If a Heat Pump Costs the Same to Run, Why Switch Away from Gas?

October 15, 2025

Why Short-Term Savings Don’t Tell the Whole Story for UK Homeowners

If you’ve been comparing heating options lately, you’ve probably wondered: “If a well installed heat pump costs the same to run, why change over?” It’s a fair question, and one that many UK homeowners are asking as they face the decision between replacing an ageing gas boiler or switching to a heat pump.

We always ask people “where do you stand on the cost vs carbon line?”  Everyone is somewhere between “highest efficiency at any cost” or “lowest capital expenditure”, most people are near the middle leaning towards carbon by the time we’re speaking to them of course.  One thing everyone has in common is that the running costs need to stack up, a heat pump will decarbonise your home heating, it’s our job to make sure you don’t pay through the nose to achieve it.

Heat pump Or Boiler

At first glance, the numbers can make it seem like there’s no point in switching if you are solely driven by running costs. Gas is still so much cheaper per unit of energy, and with UK electricity prices tied to gas, there doesn’t seem to be much of a financial advantage. But the real picture is broader, and changing quickly.

Check out our article on the importance of getting a heat pump done well!

1. The “Cheap Gas” Illusion

Right now, gas still appears cheaper because much of the UK’s electricity is still generated from natural gas. This means when gas prices rise, electricity costs often follow. But that’s already being addressed.

The UK government has committed to decoupling electricity prices from gas and massively expanding renewable energy. As the grid becomes cleaner, electricity will no longer track gas price volatility. Over time, this will make electric heating both cleaner and relatively cheaper, while gas heating faces increasing carbon costs and policy restrictions.

So while the numbers might look even today, the trajectory clearly favours electricity.

2. Future-Proofing for Regulation and Policy

The UK is moving steadily toward a low-carbon heating system. From 2025, new homes can’t install gas boilers, and fossil fuel systems are set to be phased out over the next decade.

Installing a gas boiler now may seem convenient, but it’s essentially buying into a sunset technology. Heat pumps, on the other hand, are the cornerstone of future home heating policy. Choosing one today means you won’t face another expensive system change when regulations tighten, and they will.

3. Incentives Are Changing the Cost Equation

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) currently offers £7,500 towards a heat pump installation in England and Wales. That grant brings the cost of switching much closer to that of fitting a new gas boiler, and in some cases, it makes the heat pump cheaper overall.

Add in rising gas prices, potential carbon levies, and efficiency advantages, and suddenly the “same cost to run” argument looks less convincing.

4. Efficiency That Gas Can’t Match

Even if electricity is more expensive per unit, a heat pump’s efficiency  typically around 400% (COP of 4) makes a huge difference. It produces roughly four units of heat for every one unit of electricity used, while a gas boiler can’t exceed 95% (ish) efficiency.

So you’re not just changing your fuel source you’re upgrading to a system that uses far less total energy. That’s good for your bills, and even better for emissions.

5. More Than Heating: Comfort, Cooling, and Clean Air

A heat pump offers consistent warmth, cooling in summer, and no combustion gases in your home. It’s safer, cleaner, and pairs perfectly with solar panels or home batteries, allowing you to run your heating on self-generated renewable power.

A gas boiler simply can’t compete with that flexibility, it’s locked into fossil fuel prices for life.

6. The Hidden Cost of Standing Still

Choosing another gas boiler in 2025 might seem like the path of least resistance, but it’s really just delaying the inevitable. As policies tighten and carbon costs rise, running a gas system could become more expensive  and you may end up paying twice when you eventually have to replace it.

Switching to a heat pump now means one investment that’s built to last financially, environmentally, and legally.

The Bottom Line

So, if a heat pump costs the same to run, why change over?
Because what’s “the same” today won’t stay that way for long.

Electricity prices are being restructured, gas is on its way out, and UK homes are heading toward low-carbon heating, with or without early adopters. By switching now, you’re not just making a statement about sustainability; you’re making a strategic choice that aligns with where the market, policy, and energy economics are going.

A gas boiler might feel familiar, but a heat pump is the system that makes sense for the future,  even if today’s bills look similar.
